Letters to My Daughter,written by American writer Leslie J.Swabacker,provides suggestions for his daughter’s future life on topics including religion,employment,marriage and others.The linguistic features of the source text are embodied in its elegant writing style with persuasive words,diverse syntactic structures and strong emotion.Letter serves as a vital tool for communication and emotional expression.Communicative translation theory,which focuses on the feeling of target readers,is used as a guidance to solve the difficulty of reproducing the emotional color of the source text in the translation and making the target readers get the same reading experience as the source language readers do.The author of the source text possesses a profound literary ability,and his choice of words and building of sentences are choke-full of literary grace.Reproducing the language style of the source text is another difficulty.Liu Miqing’s stylistic markers theory,which can turn the text style into concrete elements that can be illustrated in detail,is applied to analyze and identify the linguistic features of the source text from two aspects,including formal markers and informal markers.At formal markers level,lexical,syntactic and rhetoric markers are elucidated.The translation methods,namely,the conversion of voice and part of speech,annotation,amplification and omission are adopted.The translation of syntactic markers applies reconstruction,division,adding animate subject and parallelism to ensure that the translation conforms to the thinking mode and expression habits of the target readers.In addition,two rhetoric devices markers,including simile and metaphor,are elaborated.At informal markers level,the translator emphasizes the reproduction of the father’s feeling in the translation by applying modal particles,which also arouses the emotional resonance of the target readers.This translation practice tries to explore the emotional transmission in the translation of epistolary text,and summarizes the translation methods adopted,so as to provide reference for the translation of similar text type in the future.
