| Western fantasy literature has become a mature literary type after a long-term development. In recent years, the translating practices of western fantasy literature have gradually increased, but the quality is uneven.Away with the Wolves,as the novel shortlisted for the 2020 Hugo Best Novella Award,is very meticulous about the timeline, plots and character relationships, which provides a novel reading experience for Chinese readers. After searching for many websites, the translator finds no reference translation of Away with the Wolves currently yet. Therefore,in order to find out how the translation could meet the expectations of its target readers with this case, the translator refers to the theory of horizon of expectation.Hans Robert Jauss puts forward the concept of horizon of expectation, pointing out that when creating literary works, authors should consider the expected horizons of aesthetic experience of readers. He believes that the reader’s expectation horizon includes directional expectation and innovation expectation and both are important to literary creation.Under the guidance of this theory, this report targets to explore the translation skills of western fantasy literature with the case of the personal translating practice. The method of research of this paper is case study. After the translation practice and the analysis of some typical cases, this report yields the following several conclusions:In terms of satisfying readers’ directional expectation:(1)Four-character phrases could be used, which is commonly seen in Chinese expression.(2)The specification of pronouns in the original text should be highlighted which could help readers understand the target text better.(3)The order of complex sentences should be adjusted so as to conform to the logic of Chinese language. In respect of creative expectations:(1)Annotating proper notes is used to broaden readers’ horizon.(2)Keeping the original figure of speech could bring novelty to readers. The full text is divided into five chapters, which are "Introduction,Description of Translation Task and Process,Theoretical Framework,Case Study and Conclusion". |
