Dispelling Of Western-centralism In Chinglish | | Posted on:2020-09-07 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:Y N Li | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306524462074 | Subject:English Language and Literature | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | Chinglish,published in 2011,was written by the famous contemporary Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang(1957-).It is a comedy about the language of Chinglish that indicates the cultural communication between Eastern and Western.In this play,he seeks the possibilities of an equal Sino-American cultural communication by his unique cultural background and insight into these two cultures.From the perspective of Chinglish,Hwang vividly describes the cultural conflict in the process of intercultural communication of China and the West in the era of globalization.The work Chinglish has significant meaning in promoting communication between the two sides by understanding and equality.It also ha excellent enlightenment for both sides in the multicultural era.The Turn-taking Model can explore the theme of the play through topics,turns,turn-types and turn-control strategies.This thesis modifies and supplements exclamatory sentences and interrogative sentences based on the framework of turn-taking from domestic scholars Yu Dongming and Li Huadong.This thesis analyses the language features of the characters in this play to reveal their characteristics and relationship by using the turn-taking model.It also discusses how language and conversation help the development of the plot.The purpose of this thesis is to explore Hwang’s way of dispelling Western-centralism,his attitude towards Sino-Western cultural communication and his exploration of cultural identities in the context of intercultural communication.Firstly,this thesis uses turn-taking model to analyse the content of the conversation and ways of expression of characters such as Peter,Daniel and Xi Yan to reveal their characteristics and relationships in the play to subvert the unequal Sino-Western relations by combining quantitative and qualitative analysis.Secondly,this thesis discusses the cultural identities of the characters through analyzing the language and dialogue of the characters in this play,pointing out that Hwang’s transforming the white people from watching to being watched is not only the change of discourse power but also the dispelling of the Western-centralism represented by the United States in this play.Thirdly,the thesis from the perspective of intercultural communication explores the importance of establishing new cultural identities,equal communication and understanding of people from different cultures and ethnic groups in the era of globalization and multiculturalism.This thesis concludes that Hwang’s work is about the dispelling of Western-centralism.He tries to present more cultural identities and provide more choices in intercultural communication,as well as his prospects and reflections on the new relationship between China and the United States. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Chinglish, David Henry Hwang, turn-taking model, Western-centralism, cultural identity | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
