Wadang is one of the important components in traditional Chinese architecture, not noly for its function of protecting the rafters and the eaves, but also for strong decorative properties. The decorative patterns of wadang are constantly evolving and changing in the development of history. The patterns of wadang in the Qin and Han dynasties are the most glorious throughout the history of wadang, with the extremely rich and artistic patterns including images, patterns, texts, etc.,reflecting people’s thoughts about real life at that time.On the other side, hanging the wadang with beautiful meanings on the buildings also reflects people’s pursuit and yearning for a better life. The decorative application of flat ceramics is surveyed in this article and we select artistic elements of the Qin and Han dynasties for the application in flat ceramics through the classification of patterns and analysis of meanings.Combining wadang elements with flat ceramic craftsmanship by using two traditional expressions of the underglaze blue and white and the color glaze bucket color,to explore new ways for the application of wadang art to flat ceramics.Combining wadang during Qin and Han period and ceramics, two art forms with traditional Chinese feature, presents native traditional spirit, providing a feasible approach to promote traditional Chinese culture for the theme of flat ceramic decoration.
