“Audience” with the identity of multiple consumers has the right to choose and consume various entertainment methods.For the film industry,a company must compete with other entertainment industries for consumers,that is,for “Movie audiences”.As the leader of the film industry,Hollywood understands the importance of the movie audience.After the end of the First World War,Hollywood promoted genre movies to attract audiences and maintain the enthusiasm of the mass audience.At this time,the audience groups they focused on were adult males.In the 1950 s,due to the competition of TV,the change of population and living structure,Hollywood lost a large number of adult audiences,and fell out of the “Golden age”,and started a journey of self-help which gradually discover the importance of the young audiences.Young audiences have brought huge benefits to Hollywood in terms of viewing frequency,box office contribution,and public opinion promotion.Therefore,Hollywood has begun to consciously cultivate the youth audience and develop the potential of the youth market.Hollywood’s way of nurturing young audiences has brought huge profits to film companies and influenced the development of the film industry.This thesis starts with the relationship between Hollywood and the audience,sorts out the process by which Hollywood discovered the market potential of young audiences and consciously nurtured young audiences,focuses on exploring the methods of cultivating young audiences in Hollywood in the 21 st century,and analyzes the results,influences and effects of nurturing young audiences.The full text consists of five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction.It introduces the research background,research status,research significance,innovations and shortcomings of the research process of the topic of "The Ways and Enlightenments of Cultivating Teenage Audiences in Hollywood in the 21 st Century",as well as the related theories.The interpretation provides the research foundation and background support for this research.The second chapter analyzes the historical reasons why Hollywood cultivated young audiences on the basis of the history of Hollywood film industry development.The audience played an important role in the rise,decline and rebirth of the Hollywood film industry.In the 1950 s,television became the main form of entertainment for American families,and the rise of the television industry caused Hollywood to lose a large number of adult audiences.The“baby boom” brought the United States to its peak birth period in history,and the changes in the social demographic structure made Hollywood lose adult audiences in the procreation period.After World War II,the living structure of the American people has also undergone tremendous changes.A large number of middle-class residents have moved from urban areas to suburbs,causing urban theaters to lose a large number of middle-class audiences.The loss of adult audiences made Hollywood pay attention to the youth market.In the 1960 s and1970s,people born during the “baby boom” grew into teenagers with movie consumption potential,thus Hollywood began to explore the huge potential of the youth market.The third chapter focuses on Hollywood and young audiences entering the 21 st century,explores and summarizes the methods to cultivate young audiences in Hollywood.Market research and diversified marketing methods before the films?release have made the young audience get the release information of Hollywood films and appealed by those films.Hollywood cultivated young audiences by means of making “high-concept” movies through huge investment,genre selection,IP development,star joining,etc.The fourth chapter explores the results and influences of Hollywood’s way of nurturing young audiences.Hollywood’s way of cultivating young audiences has led to a trend toward integration of film types,which has also led to a decrease in the types of films.Cultivating young audiences has brought huge economic benefits to Hollywood,promoted the development of the window market and the licensing market,maintained and consolidated Hollywood?s global market share;therefore,it also led to a decrease of diversity of the film list,which restricted the viewing options of adult audiences.The fifth chapter analyzes the enlightenment of Hollywood’s cultivation of young audiences.The importance of the youth market can be seen from the ways,results,and influences of Hollywood cultivating young audiences.In China,teenagers have gradually become an important part of the mainstream audience in the film market.To develop the potential of the youth market,we can learn from the successful experience of Hollywood,which is focusing on market research,integrating marketing links,and learn the advantages of high-concept movies in venture capital.At the same time,we must avoid the shortcomings of “single film genre” caused by the development of high-concept movies.The concluding part summarizes the key points of Hollywood’s cultivation of young audiences in the 21 st century,and considers the current situation of the domestic film industry.At a time when the situation of the COVID-19 epidemic is still severe,promoting the recovery of domestic film industry and paying attention to the youth market is conducive to stimulating the new vitality of the domestic film industry.
