Abstract/Summary:
The source text “Beauty and the Brain: Neuroaesthetics” and “Painting in Neurology” is two theses of the book Brain and Art,which mainly introduces aesthetics and therapeutics. In response to common neurological diseases of middle-aged and elderly people, such as stroke and epilepsy, routine treatments are often used to relieve symptoms in China, which ignores the psychological state of patients. However,as a psychological intervention, art therapy can promote the expression of patients’ emotions in a nonverbal way. From this point of view, the translation practice can not only deepen people’s understanding of art therapy, but also provide reference for relevant domestic medical workers.Brain and Art is an informative text with abundant terminologies and complex sentences, whose writing purpose is to effectively convey the professional information and knowledge to target readers.Hence,in order to be faithful to the content of the source text, making shifts in the translation is necessary.Based on Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory, level shifts and category shifts are applied to this translation project so as to make the target text acceptable for the target readers and be in line with the Chinese language expressions. This translation report guided by Translation Shifts Theory mainly studies the English-Chinese translation of informative texts in the field of aesthetics and therapeutics, hoping to provide the translation of similar texts with useful references in the future.
