An E-C Translation Project On Intel 2020 Annual Report (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory

The world has witnessed the high-speed development of the information economy.As one of the leading enterprises in the IT industry,Intel Corporation has been taking its opportunity to create a vigorous development and innovation of high technology.Intel 2020 Annual Report introduces the latest technology products such as high-end chips,Advanced Driving Assistance systems,cloud computing,and cellular modems developed respectively by Internet of Things Group,Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group,Programmable Solutions Group,and Client Computing Group,which set the trend towards the development of the IT industry and are the first batches of products to be put into the market.Unfortunately,domestic translators tend to pay less attention to the value of the IT annual reports.The value and contents of the reports are often neglected and overlooked by the translation field and the reading public at large.The translator finds out that high-technology vocabulary is obscure and arcane in the actual translation process.Complex sentences appear one after another with a close connection,and the logic links between paragraphs are rather obscure.Therefore,the translator tries to use two translation shift strategies,level shifts,and category shifts,to overcome the difficulties.Some translation skills,such as shifts from grammar to words,shifts from the former to the latter,and shifts from the whole to parts,are proven to be effective solutions to those translation difficulties and make the vocabulary translation and sentence translation smoother and more accurate.Meanwhile,during the translation process,the translator tries to add the discourse shifts strategy with critical thinking to enhance the logic and coherence between sentences and paragraphs,thus further making each chapter’s being eminently readable by using translation skills of division,a shift of perspective,and conversion,etc.Generally,this translation project analyses and solves the translation difficulties encountered by the translator during the translation practice and discusses the application of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory into the Chinese translation of IT English texts to shed light on the Chinese translation of IT texts in future.
