Analysis Of Attitudinal Resources In The News On China Women Volleyball Team In 2019 Volleyball World Cup

China Women’s Volleyball Team has always been drawing the attention from Chinese people and even the whole world.With China Women’s Volleyball Team returning to the world championship with 11 victories in the 2019 Women’s Volleyball World Cup,China Women’s Volleyball Team’s spirit of arduous strugle,solidarity and cooperation has become a positive energy inspiring our nation and the world.Appraisal theory is based on systemic functional linguistics and is mainly used to analyze the attitude,viewpoints,and positions expressed with of various appraisal resources in discourses.Based on the attitude system of Appraisal Theory,30 pieces of English news on the performance of China Women Volleyball Team in 2019 Women’s Volleyball World Cup reported by domestically influential official media are taken as research data to analyze the distribution and realizations of attitudinal resources in the news discourses.Attitudinal resources are marked and the top 20 words with the highest frequency are retrieved with UAM Corpus Tool and Ant Conc respectively in the collected news to explore the positive discourse implication in the news context.Based on statistic analysis of data,it is found that there exist a wealth of attitudinal resources in the collected news discourse.From the perspective of the types of attitude,the proportion of appreciation resources is 54.37%,the proportion of judgment resources is32.44%,and the proportion of emotional resources is 13.19%.It can be seen that the collected 30 news reports mainly emphasize China Women’s Volleyball Team’s social influence and social value with appreciation resources.In addition,the proportion of positive attitudinal resources is higher than that of negative attitudinal resources.Positive attitude resources and negative attitude resources affirm the value of women’s volleyball spirit directly and indirectly.The proportion of explicit attitudinal resources is higher than that of implicit attitudinal resources from the expression of attitude,showing a clear positive attitude tendency.Finally,the realizations of attitudinal resources are also different.Affect resources are mainly realized with verbs and adverbs;judgment resources are mainly realized with verbs,adjectives and adverbs.In appreciation resources,the social influence and social value of news discourse are mainly realized with adjectives.
