The Organic Form And The Start Of Modern Chinese Novels

The time 1920s is of significance to the start of modern Chinese fiction.During the 1920s,there came a large number of short stories and researchers have done much research on them,while the start of modern Chinese novels is still unclear.In fact,organicism with the concept the“organic form" provided innovation to the modern Chinese novels.This dissertation is aimed at discussing how the organicism,as well as the“organic form",came into China and grew to be as a popular point of view in the 1920s,which propelled the start of modern Chinese novels and the change of the traditional Chapter Novels.There are three chapters in the paper.The first chapter presents the exploration on modern novels from different literary schools in China during the 1920’s.Comparing to the boom of the short stories after the New Culture Movement,it took longer time for the modern Chinese novels to sprout.There is a general consensus from different literary schools that there should be modern Chinese novels.Different literary schools taking up different positions in the literature field,collided with each other while they communicated with each other,weaving a net of modern Chinese literature,which impelled the start of modern Chinese novels.The second chapter discusses how the critic concepts changed from the traditional ones to the modern ones from the perspective of the spread of the“organic form".The concept of the“organic form" was introduced to China by Hushi during the New Cultural Movement,and then the Literature Research Society and the group of Critical Review explained it concrete and systematic.After that,it popularized among the writers and the critics,including the traditional story-writers.The third chapter discusses how the“organic form" impelled the start of the realistic modern Chinese novels and grew to be a general consensus.The key to the start of modern Chinese novel is to deal with the reality and to structure a novel,and the“organic form" provided the inspiration.Although the“organic form" faced some challenges at the beginning of the modern Chinese literature,with the development of the revolution thoughts,it inspired the novelists who tried to discover deep-seated values in reality and helped novelists to structure modern novels.The organic form also influenced the change of the Chapter Novels.The Literature Research Society,the group of Critical Review and the traditional story-writers constructed the literature field together.They imported the organic form to China,interpreted the genre "novel" in different ways and propelled the start of the modern Chinese novels.This process argues that the modern Chinese novels resulted from the conversations and collisions from different literary schools during the 1920’s.
