Today,as the world situation is constantly developing and changing,although the epidemic has slowed down the pace of global promotion of Chinese,the general trend of international promotion of Chinese still exists,online teaching of Chinese as a foreign language is in full swing.In the process of participating in the online Chinese teaching practice at the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawaii,I found that students’ motivation to learn Chinese will be affected by ethnicity to a certain extent.Learners with Chinese background and students without Chinese background will show different learning motivation characteristics in the process of Chinese learning.Therefore,in order to explore the influence of etnnic Chinese and non-ethnic Chinese backgrounds on learners’ Chinese learning motivation,this study,based on the learning motivation theory,interviewed three Chinese learners with different ethnic backgrounds,and analyzed the interview results through the Grounded theory,to explore the following research questions:(1)Does the Chinese ethnic background of learners affect their Chinese learning motivation?Specifically reflected in what aspects?(2)What are the main factors that affect the Chinese learning motivation of nonethnic Chinese learners?(3)What enlightenment can solving the above problems bring to the improvement of teaching Chinese as a foreign language?The results show that:(1)The influence of the Chinese background on the learners’Chinese learning motivation is deep and closer to the emotional realm;(2)The influence of ethnic Chinese background on learners’ Chinese learning motivation is also affected by other factors,so its proportion varies from person to person;(3)The Chinese learning motivation of non-ethnic Chinese learners is contingent to a certain extent,and is closely related to their personal experience,especially the Chinese learning experience;(4)As experiences enrich and personal needs change,the types of motivations of non-ethnic Chinese learners of Chinese will also shift and become more diverse.
