An Analysis Of Guo Tanxian Of Agricultural Education And Agricultural And Forestry Practice (1915-1929)

Guo Tanxian(1886-1929)was a famous agronomist,forester,and agricultural educator in modern Chinese history.He went to the United States to study agronomy in his early years.After returning to China,he has been engaged in agricultural education and agricultural and forestry practice for a long time,and made important contributions to agricultural education and the development of agriculture and forestry in modern China.This article takes the agricultural education and agricultural and forestry practices of Guo Tanxian as the starting point,and analyzes the various efforts and explorations of advanced agricultural intellectuals represented by Guo Tanxian in the context of the modern Chinese agricultural transformation.In agricultural education,Guo Tanxian worked successively in Jiangsu Provincial First Agricultural School,Southeast University and Jinling University,and gradually deepened his knowledge and understanding of agricultural education in practice.He was deeply influenced by the education model and system of Cornell University in the education reform.He tried to introduce and promote the "research-education-promotion" trinity education model and system,which contributed to the modernization of China’s higher agricultural education.contribute.In terms of agriculture and forestry practice,Guo Tanxian has done a lot of work and exploration.During the period of the No.1 Agricultural School in Jiangsu Province,he reformed agricultural education and actively engaged in tree planting and afforestation,trying to improve China’s agriculture through agricultural experiments.At Southeast University,he turned to cotton breeding and cultivation improvement and promotion.During this period,Guo Tanxian tried to improve Chinese agriculture through agricultural technology,but did not receive the desired effect.From this he realized that the improvement and promotion of agricultural technology alone could not achieve the goal of improving China’s agriculture.Influenced by the thoughts of agricultural finance and agricultural socialization at that time,he actively participated in the founding of Jiangsu Province Farmers Bank during Jinling University,and turned to the road of agricultural financial cooperation until his death.Through the exploration,the western agricultural science and technology are combined with China’s agricultural reality,focusing on agricultural education,and paying attention to the actual problems of agriculture and forestry.In the face of the changes of the times and the real problems of agriculture and forestry development,he actively changed the research path and tried to improve agriculture from different directions.In the process of exploration,his understanding of agriculture and forestry education and agriculture and forestry practice has also been continuously developed and deepened.Guo Tanxian has made outstanding contributions to the development of China’s modern agriculture and forestry,and it also serves as a reference for the development of today’s agriculture and forestry.
