Research On The Application Of English Vocabulary Learning Strategies Of Rural Junior High School Students

Abstract/Summary:
According to English Curricular Standards for Compulsory Education(2011),junior high school students need not to only master a certain amount of English vocabulary,but also to master the vocabulary learning strategies.However,it’s quite difficult for the majority of junior high school students to apply learning strategies in the process of learning English vocabulary effectively and improving the learning effect of English vocabulary.Thus,many domestic scholars have conducted research on the English vocabulary learning strategies of junior high school students.However,among the research,only few studies are about rural junior high school students.In view of this,the author investigates the current situation of the application of English vocabulary learning strategies for rural junior high school students.In this thesis,based on Cognitive Learning Theory and Monitor Theory,the author takes the students in NO.2 Middle School as an example to investigate four important questions.1: How much do rural junior high school students know about English vocabulary learning strategies? 2: What vocabulary learning strategies are commonly used by rural middle school students? 3: What problems do rural junior high school students have in the application of vocabulary learning strategies as well as the causes of these problems? 4: What English vocabulary learning strategies are suitable for rural students?This thesis mainly adopts questionnaire and interview methods.The research subjects are the students in Grade 9 and 6 English teachers from NO.2 Middle School of Xishui County,Guizhou Province,and the author did the investigation in June,2021.The author first distributed 231 paper questionnaires to the students,and 220 valid questionnaires were collected.Then the author analyzed these valid questionnaires to find out the main problems existing in the application of English vocabulary strategies among rural junior high school students.Finally,the author randomly interviewed 10 students in Grade 9 and 6 English teachers to get the causes of these problems.Through the investigation,the author found that the main problems of the respondents in the application of English vocabulary learning strategies are as follows.First of all,they are short of the cognition of vocabulary learning strategies.Besides,they can’t correctly and effectively apply the vocabulary learning strategies.Most students memorize vocabulary by rote memorization and repeated spelling.And finally,their ability and awareness of using learning strategies are weak.Most students lack self-management and have no clear goals for their English learning.They just blindly follow the teacher’s teaching.Combined with the questionnaire survey and interview,the author found that these problems are closely related to students’ lack of learning awareness,lack of teachers,single teaching methods and lack of English learning environment.Therefore,the author suggests that rural English teachers should focus on helping students to improve their awareness of vocabulary learning strategies,enriching the teaching methods of English vocabulary.At the same time,teachers should let students become the master of learning and guide them to explore and form effective vocabulary learning strategies,so that students can change from passive to active in vocabulary learning.And finally,creating a good English learning environment to provide more convenience for students to effectively apply vocabulary learning strategies.
