The Min River is a river that flows alone into the sea in southeast China, with a special geographical location,’backed by China and facing the sea’.The special geographical environment has given rise to a unique Neolithic archaeological culture.Based on the Neolithic archaeological materials found and excavated in the middle and lower reaches of the Min River, this paper analyses the relationship between several archaeological cultures, attempts to elaborate on their cultural origins and destinations on the premise of clarifying cultural factors, and explores the horizontal exchange between the middle and lower reaches of the Min River and the surrounding areas, with emphasis on the cultural interaction with the upper reaches. The article is divided into four parts:The first part is an introduction, which defines the temporal and spatial scope of the article, reviews a brief history of Neolithic archaeological research in the region and divides it into three separate phases, then presenting current problems and research methods accordingly. The second part,Chapters 2 and 3,is a basic study based on archaeological material.Chapter 2 begins with material from the eighth excavation at the Tanshishan site and combines it with material from several other excavations and several other sites to grasp the question of the phasing of the Tanshishan culture as a whole. The main content of the third chapter is to analyze the characteristics of the artifacts of the Keqiutou culture and the Huanguashan culture, and on this basis, discuss the relationship between the lower Tanshishan culture and the Keqiutou culture, pointing to a possible local origin for the Huanguashan culture. The third section deals with the horizontal exchange between the middle and lower reaches of the Min River and the surrounding areas, with a focus on the cultural interaction with the upper reaches.Archaeological evidence suggests that elements of the culture of the middle and lower reaches of the Min River have been found in the Neolithic archaeological cultures of the surrounding areas to a greater or lesser extent, suggesting that cultural exchanges of varying degrees took place between the cultures. The fourth section summarises the findings of the article and identifies the shortcomings of the paper, with more in-depth and specific research pending an update of the material.
