Sports is an everlasting topic relevant not only to humans’ life but to one country’s comprehensive strength.Insightful guidance is needed for the organization and development of sports.The book of social science,Knowing the Score: What Sports Can Teach Us About Philosophy,offers this guidance from the perspective of philosophy.The author David Papineau,Professor of Philosophy of Natural Science at King’s College London and of Philosophy at City University of New York,takes advantage of his expertise to give a new dimension to sports issues.His work is worth introducing for its rational explanations for confusing sports phenomena and scientific suggestions for the improvement of competitive level.The source text of the translation task is an excerpt of the book from the introduction to the fifth chapter.It is found that the text combines the logic of philosophy and the cultural background knowledge of sports.And the text therefore involves many different contexts with large amounts of implicit information,which brings translation difficulties to this social science text.To solve the problem,six kinds of implicit information are summarized based on the three types of contexts in the pragmatics and made explicit by specific translation techniques.The process is finally presented in this report.It can be found through this practice that the difficulty of translating social science texts can be overcome by identifying different implicit information in different contexts in the text and translating it by explicitation techniques.The practice has a clearer definition of techniques and a more practical value than the former.This report consists of six chapters.The first chapter introduces the source text and the significance of the report.The second chapter describes the process of translation divided into three parts.The third chapter gives a brief introduction to the definitions of explicitation,translation techniques,and three types of contexts.The fourth chapter concludes with six kinds of implicit information in these contexts.The fifth chapter is devoted to a case study of the translation techniques for the explicitation of the concluded implicit information.The last chapter concludes the report’s findings and limitations.
