As an important representative of the second generation of Lingnan Painting School,Guan Shanyue arrived in Guilin in 1940 and created a large number of works.Among them, the "Hundred mile map of Lijiang River" has a strong flavor of life and fresh artistic conception.During this period,Guan Shanyue began to create with the theme of landscape painting. As one of Guan Shanyue’s important creations in this period,he painted a bleak and withered scenery on both sides of the Lijiang River in Guilin in the form of a long scroll, reflecting Guan Shanyue’s understanding and practice of the spirit of landscape painting; And under the special background of the reform of Chinese painting during the Anti-Japanese War,he deeply thought about the connection between sketching and creation, the formation and innovation of self style and so on.By combing the various forms of Chinese landscape painting, this paper analyzes the uniqueness of the long scroll of landscape painting and the reason why Guan Shanyue chose the composition of the long scroll. The special composition form of long scroll has the cultural connotation of "to be broad and subtle",which can not only show a broad macro vision, but also show a fine micro perspective. This is an important reason why Guan Shanyue mainly uses long scroll to depict both sides of the Lijiang River, and also fully shows the deep origin of Chinese landscape painting long scroll and Chinese culture.Firstly, this paper studies the reasons for the creation of the “Hundred mile map of the Lijiang River”,and finds that the emergence of the “Hundred mile map of the Lijiang River is not only sketching, but also related to Guan Shanyue’s Anti-Japanese war background and his choice of sketching landscape themes according to the changes of the times. In Guilin, where scholars gathered at that time, bookstores and publishing houses were everywhere, and books and newspapers were in a wide variety;Cultural groups have sprung up like bamboo shoots after a spring rain, and cultural activities have reached a climax one after another;Secondly, this paper makes an in-depth analysis of the artistic characteristics of the “Hundred mile map of the Lijiang River” from the perspective of conception, perspective, writing, color setting, inscription and postscript.Wu Qichang mentioned this in the preface and postscript, which provides the author with many analytical perspectives.Through in-depth study of the “Hundred mile map of the Lijiang River,he found that Guan Shanyue not only inherited the core spirit of Lingnan Painting School, but also imitated the writing and composition of the ancients. It can be seen that Guan Shanyue is the faithful successor and promoter of Lingnan Painting School.Guan Shanyue’s practice provides a theoretical basis for modern creation; Finally, this paper expounds the artistic value of the “Hundred mile map of the Lijiang River”.Guan Shanyue’s "Hundred mile map of Lijiang River" is the best practice for the "new traditional Chinese painting" and "integrating ancient and modern" of Lingnan Painting School, and also gradually forms its own landscape painting style.Guan Shanyue attaches importance to learning from nature and advocates going outdoors for sketching. From 1940 to 1945,he practiced the sketch of traveling thousands of miles. This period played a very important role in the improvement of Guan Shanyue’s painting art.At the same time,it also integrated Western painting techniques in the treatment of objects and images. This is not only an important practice for Guan Shanyue and Lingnan Painting School, but also a rethink of Guan Shanyue’s artistic concept.
