| Reading is an important approach in language learning,but the traditional English reading teaching pays too much attention to the extraction of text information and neglects the development of students’ reading literacy in language learning,such reading is superficial and passive,which is not conducive to the cultivation of students’ core competence of English subject.Therefore,the teaching of English reading should focus on students’ reading character and reading ability rather than reading achievement.In view of this,how to use the effective reading teaching activities has become a widespread topic of social discussion.As a new kind of reading teaching activity,reading circles has become mature and widely used in foreign countries.This study applies reading circles to English reading teaching in senior high schools to explore three research questions:(1)How do senior high school students perceive reading circles?(2)How will the application of reading circles affect senior high school students’ English reading character?(3)How will the application of reading circles affect senior high school students’ English reading ability?This study mainly includes questionnaire,interview and action research methods.The researcher sets two parallel classes of a key high school in Z City of F province as the experimental class and the control class,and carried out two rounds of action research in the experimental class.In the action research,the experimental class adopts the reading circles teaching method,while the control class uses the ordinary traditional reading teaching method,and its teaching time,teaching content and extra-curricular reading amount are consistent.And in the process,the author uses the theory of triangular mutual evidence and collects students’ reading circles role sheet,peer list,self-evaluation list,teaching log,student log and classroom observation video as the basis of qualitative research and analysis.In addition,the data of questionnaire and reading comprehension test are used as the basis of quantitative analysis.After a semester of empirical research,the researcher draws the following conclusions:(1)High school students generally hold a positive attitude towards reading circles.The survey found that the frequency of using reading circles in English reading teaching in senior high schools was low,and the teachers’ explanation system was not perfect,leading to the unsatisfactory cognition and evaluation of the application of reading circles in senior high schools.In reading circle activities,senior high school students are not used to reading independently and cooperatively in groups,and prefer traditional reading methods.The interview found that students with different reading levels held different attitudes towards reading circle.Among them,students with intermediate and advanced English reading level have high recognition of it.(2)The application of reading circles can improve the reading quality of senior high school students.After the application of reading circles in high school English reading teaching,students’ reading interest,reading strategy,reading quantity,reading frequency,reading behavior and reading attitude have been improved to varying degrees.After the experiment,students’ reading habits and reading experience have changed significantly,more than half of the students have changed: the students from passive reading to active reading,began to enjoy the fun of reading.(3)The application of reading circles can improve the reading ability of senior high school students.After the application of reading circles,the language knowledge,decoding ability,understanding and cultural awareness of the students in the experimental class have been improved obviously,and the students’ reading comprehension scores have been improved greatly and the post-test scores have significant differences.It is found that the discussion and presentation of the reading circles is helpful to improve students’ language knowledge,decoding ability,understanding and cultural awareness.Among them,some high-level English readers in the experimental class said that the application of the reading circle had improved their reading ability,but most of the students had serious thinking in the examination,overvaluing their reading achievements and neglecting the essence of reading,it is hoped that this can arouse the teachers’ attention in the reading teaching process,pay more attention to the student’s reading ability,improve the students’ reading literacy.In addition,this study puts forward some teaching suggestions and inspirations of changing the concept of reading teaching in senior high school,developing students’ reading literacy and improving teachers’ reading literacy,paying attention to students of different levels and teaching students according to their aptitude,so as to improve students’ reading character and reading ability,and promote the development of their reading literacy.At the end of the paper,the author suggests that the application of reading circle in extracurricular extensive reading should not be limited in class,and that it should be combined with writing class effectively. |
