Abstract/Summary:
Relevance theory proposes an ostensive-inferential model to explain communication,so it can provide adequate explanation to translation, which is a special kind of communication. This paper selects the Chinese translation of Chapter14 to 19 in a non-fiction,Master Peter 2.0,as a case study, analyzes problems in the process of translation of dialogues from the perspective of relevance theory, and explains the theoretical mechanisms behind translation strategies.Based on the analysis, this paper aims to propose methods to optimize the translation of dialogues, summarize strategies to achieve optimal relevance between the source text and the target text to improve the quality of translation. In the process of translating, the author believes that there are two kinds of communications in the translation of dialogues. In the first communication, the translator communicates with the author of the source text as a reader. The translator should focus on both the informative intention and communicative intentions of the speakers and the functions of the dialogues. With the help of the context, culture and cognitive environment of the source text, the translator can infer the intentions of the speakers and obtain a full understanding of the dialogues. In the second communication, the translator, acting as an author, should focus on cultural default.Taking into account the knowledge, experience and expectations of target-text readers, the translator should be flexible in using direct translation and indirect translation to seek optimal relevance based on the principle of equal inferential distance in translating,so that target-text readers can achieve contextual effects without unnecessary processing efforts. This is the right way to ensure the successful communication among the author, the translator and readers.
