| As a constituent element of practical wisdom, deliberation is an important theme in Aristotle’s ethics, and it is important for virtuous action and personal virtue. However, with the deepening of the study of Aristotle’s text, some scholars have found a certain tension between deliberation and virtuous action. In this paper,we will sort out and reconstruct the main threads and core views of the debate on the tension between deliberation and virtuous action in the framework of Aristotle’s theory. This paper will show that Annas’ approach is the most promising after sorting out numerous points of view and reviewing three alternative solutions to the tension. Moreover, the paper will introduce contemporary moral psychology research on experts to further refine Annas’ theory, showing that deliberation is still valid among the actions of virtuous people. On the one hand, some of the virtuous actions performed by virtuous people require deliberation.Virtuous people in reality still need to use deliberation to find the most appropriate action when faced with some completely unfamiliar and complex situations.Virtuous people,on the other hand,do act virtuously based on a certain intuition, which is largely the result of deliberation, and deliberation has an improving and enhancing effect on the development of intuition. |
