Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is based on the translation of the introduction and Chapter Two of Thrivers: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine,a parenting book.As a popular science text, the source text is science-based,easily accessible, literary and interesting. It is a challenge for the translator(i.e.,the author)to reproduce the above four characteristics in the target text.In this thesis, the author analyzes typical translation examples from the perspective of Relevance Theory, discusses the choice of appropriate translation strategies to achieve the optimal relevance in the target text by inferring the cognitive environment of the target readers,so that readers can attain enough contextual effect through small processing efforts.Based on the inference of the lexical, logical and encyclopaedic information in target readers’ cognitive environment, this thesis provides a translation that can realize the original author’s informative and communicative intention and reproduce the aforementioned four characteristics of the source text. Finally,it also summarizes the strategies for the translation of popular science texts based on the Relevance Theory.
