Zeng Xi is a famous calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.His calligraphy art works are mellow and elegant,gentle and graceful,which exuding a strong bearing of literati and intellectuals.As a typical stele calligrapher,he continued the calligraphy tradition of the Qing Dynasty,introduced aesthetic factors beyond stele plate and stone carving into his calligraphy creation,and sold calligraphy in his later years,which had a considerable influence in the art world of Shanghai during the Republic of China.His distinctive personal style of writing was not achieved overnight,but accumulated through inheritance and innovation with repeated practice.In combination with the ecological environment of calligraphy in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China,this paper makes a systematic analysis of Zeng Xi’s thought of calligraphy,then summarizes its ideological connotation and causes.It introduces his calligraphy style development,aesthetic taste and practice calligraphy with calligrapher’s personality,so as to reveal his calligraphy thoughts value,it explores his calligraphy thoughts,including learning method,the stone inscription rubbings book ideas and aesthetics.It discriminates the artistic styles of all kinds of calligraphy and feels the high unity of artistic forms and creative ideas in his calligraphy works.Zeng Xi seeks a balance between conservative and innovative,then takes "natural aesthetics" as his pursuit to achieve self-breakthrough.Finally,it objectively evaluates the influence of his calligraphy art on calligraphers of later generations.
