Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the first six chapters of Fatal Fried Rice, written by Chinese American writer Vivien Chien, known for her Noodle Shop Mystery series.Fatal Fried Rice is about Lana, who can not cook Chinese food but owns a Chinese restaurant. She experienced a murder while studying in a culinary school. The source text is full of Chinese food culture, ever changing since it was introduced to western countries, and American slangs, idioms and meaningful dialogues worth putting under spotlight.Aiming to promote cultural exchanges between China and the West, the translator chooses functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory of this practice, the core of which is that the feelings of the target language readers through reading the translation should be roughly the same as those of the original language readers, that is,the two languages should achieve functional equivalence. The translator spares no pains to reproduce the information of the source text to the target readers.Based on the reader-centered principle, this report analyzes the source text from lexical, syntactic and textual levels, then summarizes the characteristics of the source text, translation problems and solutions. For the proper nouns, slangs, idioms and dialogues in the source text, the translator has adopted the methods of literal translation plus annotation, free translation, semantic extension and so on.Through this way,the translator tries to explain these languages with professional or strong local flavor clearly to readers,so as to reproduce the literary beauty of the source text as much as possible and bring better reading experience to readers. This practice has consolidated the translator’s translation knowledge and improved the translation ability. While bringing enjoyable experience to the target language readers, the translator hopes to provide reference for the subsequent translation of similar texts.
