Nowadays,China’s communication and exchanges with the world have been increasing.Faced with a multilingual environment, interpreters may encounter speakers with different accents, which undoubtedly have certain impacts on interpreters’ mental state and interpretation quality. However, few experiments are conducted to record the psychological states of interpreters when they are faced with accents in interpretation. Thus, this thesis will explore the impact of the speaker’s accent on interpreters from two aspects, including psychological state and interpretation quality. This thesis conducts empirical research in light of the cognitive physiological theory of emotion. The author selects 12 students, major in English Interpreting from Inner Mongolia University, and all subjects received one-year interpreting training. Then, the author adopts two pieces of materials for the subjects to do English to Chinese consecutive interpretation(CI).One of the materials is an accented speech, while the other material is a speech without accent.During this experiment, the performance of each subject is recorded. Moreover, each subject’s performance is evaluated and scored from four perspectives, respectively fluency, fidelity, accuracy, and coherence.Besides, the author applies the State Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI)to measure student interpreters’ mental states. After consecutive interpretation, the subjects are required to finish some open-ended questions.Based on the data collected in the experiment, correlations between accents, interpretation quality and STAI score are analyzed through Excel and SPSS software. The data collected in this experiment demonstrate that no significance is found between moderate or mild accent and STAI score in CI.Moreover, accent demonstrates strong significance with fidelity as well as total score of interpretation. In addition, state anxiety inventory(S-AI)shows a strong negative correlation with fluency and total score. That is to say,the lower the S-AI score is,the higher the fluency score and total score could be.This thesis conducts experimental research in light of the cognitive physiological theory of emotion, paying attention to the mental changes of student interpreters, which offers data references for future research. |
