Study On The Prevalence And Influencing Factors Of Sexual Abuse Among Rural Left-behind Middle School Children In China

Abstract/Summary:
Objective: To understand the prevalence and influencing factors of sexual abuse among rural left-behind middle school students in China,and to know their cognition and preventive behavior towards sexual abuse.To put forward some suggestions on the prevention of sexual abuse.Methods: 1-3 junior middle schools and 1-3 senior middle schools in rural area were selected from ZJ,JX,GX,HB,HN,SC,GZ and XJ respectively by the method of purpose sampling,all students in school were sampled as the research objects.Using self-made Child Sexual Abuse Questionnaire to investigate students’ cognition and preventive behavior towards sexual abuse and the occurrence of sexual abuse.χ2 test,t-test,rank sum test and logistic regression method were used to analyze the influencing factors.Result:(1)The incidence of sexual abuse: a total of 3,478 rural left-behind junior middle school students and 2,337 rural left-behind senior middle school students were investigated in this study.The incidence of sexual abuse in rural left-behind middle school students was 14.9%,among which the incidence in rural left-behind junior middle school students was 10.8%,and the incidence in rural left-behind senior middle school students was 21.0%.(2)Cognitive status towards sexual abuse: among junior middle school students,female students(OR=0.709)and non-only child(OR=0.734)had better cognitive status,while senior middle school students who were took care by their mothers had worse cognitive status(OR=1.406).Among senior high school students,those both of the parents left for work(OR=1.449)had worse cognitive status of sexual abuse,and those who had worse relationship with caregivers(OR=0.778)had better cognition of sexual abuse.(3)Preventive behaviors towards sexual abuse: among junior middle school students,female(OR=0.514)and only child(OR=0.752)had better preventive behaviors,while those both of the parents left for work(OR=1.341),took care by their mothers(OR=1.324),and had worse relationship with caregivers(OR=1.879)had worse preventive behaviors.Among senior middle school students,female(OR=0.402),cared by their grandparents(OR=0.696)and others(OR=0.666)had better preventive behaviors,while those both of the parents left for work(OR=1.449)and had worse relationship with caregivers(OR=1.532)had worse preventive behaviors.(4)Influencing factors of sexual abuse: the risk factor for sexual abuse of rural left-behind junior middle school students was average/poor relationship with caregiver(OR=1.716),the protective factors were female(OR=0.629),non-only child(OR=0.494),living in the immediate family(OR=0.626),and high level of preventive behavior(OR=0.269).Among rural left-behind senior middle school students,female(OR=0.589)and high level of preventive behavior(OR=0.324)were the protective factors of sexual abuse.Conclusions: The prevalence of sexual abuse among left-behind middle school students in rural areas is high.Gender,preventive behavior,relationship with caregivers and family structure were significantly related to the prevalence of sexual abuse.In the future,sex education courses should be carried out timely in rural schools to increase students’ knowledge of sex and the level of preventive behavior.Especially,attention should be paid to sex education for boys and senior high middle school students,and targeted teaching should be carried out for students of different genders and ages.Caregivers should pay more attention to children’s personal safety and create a harmonious family atmosphere.
