This article takes the post-war American conservatism as the research object,through combing its development history in various periods,objectively describing the construction process of conservatism,and analyzing and explaining the theoretical core of conservatism in combination with American political practice,and clarifying its relationship with liberalism.Complex relationship.On this basis,this article focuses on the extreme turn of American conservatism in the 21 st century,and examines the performance of this turn and the underlying reasons behind it.It is reasonable to predict the political consequences that conservatism will turn to extremes in order to interpret the current United States.The political development of society provides an effective analysis model.After the war Ⅱ,American conservatism started from opposing the New Deal liberalism and the extreme left of communism,and took gentleness and prudence as the political virtue and principle of conduct,and carried out self-positioning and theoretical construction in the struggle against liberal radical thought.During the period,it passed the Barkley era With the political practice and theoretical accumulation of the Reagan era,a conservative ideological system with freedom as the background,Anglo-Protestant culture as the tradition,and American democratic system as the template was finally formed.Conservatives have always taken the protection of "American faith" as their historical mission and regarded themselves as "maintainers of order and builders of democracy." Their actions are also closely focused on this theme.Entering the 21 st century,American society is changing,and conservatism is transforming in adjustment and surviving in crises.Although conservatives in the Bush era were able to show off on the international stage,conservatism in the Trump era was embarrassed on all sides.With the outbreak of concentrated domestic economic contradictions and the intensification of cultural wars,conservatism and liberalism have attacked each other and have not given way to each other.Conservatives launched a fierce counterattack against liberals’ sharp "left turn",both out of defense of American civilization and self-preservation in an existential crisis.But in the process of fighting against liberals,conservatism was engulfed in anger and went to extremes: this is not only reflected in the tough,paranoid,and radical attitudes and methods,but also in the ideological nationalism,racism,and populism.However,facts have proved that the extreme turn of conservatism not only promotes the continuous escalation of the political polarization of the United States and causes the country to split;it also does not help the conservatives’ current crisis,and it is even more detrimental to their future survival.Nowadays,conservatives and liberals are striving for compromise and prudence.People’s positions are severely divided."Old America" and "New America" are torn apart.The prospect of democratic politics is bleak,and the future of American conservatism is ill-fated.Therefore,this article believes that in the face of severe democratic crisis and irresistible generational changes,conservatives must regain the political virtues of moderation and prudence,and liberals should also reflect on themselves.Both sides must actively seek political consensus,otherwise they will be confronting others.China disrupts itself and destroys democracy while guarding freedom.Looking back on the past,the United States was once a beacon of freedom and democracy.The system of separation of powers,the constitutional government and the rule of law,and the two-party competition pattern have long history.Looking at the current situation,the gap between the rich and the poor,the surge of radical ideas,the emergence of political chaos,and the era is full of crises.Looking into the future,the value dispute between conservatism and liberalism has become increasingly prominent.Then where should the United States go?Will it follow the footsteps of the country’s failure or will it be able to smoothly bridge the division with political wisdom?
