BackgroundSocial interaction plays a very important role in college life. The harmony of social relationship is of great significance to one’s study, daily life, job selection and career development and mental health. With the rapid development of the society, the social interaction objects, communication environment, and economic conditions of college students have undergone tremendous changes, social interaction is becoming more complex.Exploring the influencing factors of college students’ social preferences is of great significance for promoting the physical and mental health of college students and dealing with problems in social interactions among college students.ObjectiveThis study explores the influencing factors of college students’ social preferences. It explores whether socioeconomic status(SES)and its dimensions have an impact on college students’ social preferences, and then explores whether college students with different SES levels have specific brain functional basis, which may affect their social preferences.MethodThis study selected undergraduates from two medical universities in Henan Province as samples to collect information on their SES,social preferences, and EEG data.1.The questionnaire method was used to evaluate the SES level and social preference of college students. The selected research tools were “The General Information Questionnaire” “The College Student Socioeconomic Status Scale” “The College Student Social Preference Scale”.A total of 303 valid questionnaires were collected. The questionnaire data was entered into SPSS22.0 to analyze the relationship between SES andcollege students’ social preferences.2.Electroencephalograph is used to detect resting EEG data of college students. On the basis of informed consent,259 college students were recruited to participate in the experiment, collecting resting EEG data, and then pre-processing and micro-state analysis of the EEG data to further explore the relationship between the college students’ EEG micro-state and SES.Result1.College students’ SES level and its dimensions(parents’ professional and technical level, family economic level, and emergency economic ability)were significantly positively correlated with the SES level of the friends they chose(P<0.01).Another dimension of SES,the parental education of college students is not significantly related to the SES of their choice of friends(P>0.05).2.SES as a factor influencing social preference does have its nerve electrophysiological basis, which is mainly reflected in the Class A(speech processing) and Class C(emotion processing)networks of the EEG microstate. The SES of college students was significantly negatively correlated with the activity of the brain’s speech function(Class A)network(r=-0.202,P<0.01),and positively correlated with the activity of the emotional function(Class C)network(r=0.276,P<0.01).All tests were still significant after Bonferroni correction(P<0.05/n).3.There are statistically significant differences in the acceptance of poor friends and funding sources for social activities among college students with different parental education and parental occupational skills(P<0.05).College students’ parents have lower education or occupational skill level, they are more likely to accept friends from poor families, and social activities are funded more by working.Conclusion1.College students’ SES affects their social preferences, and individuals with different SES have their own neural network foundations. This neural network foundation may be abrain function factor that leads to social preferences2.Occupational skill level of parents, family economic level and emergency economic ability affect college students’ social preferences.3.This study suggests that future research can positively affect college students’ choice of friends and social issues by improving the brain’s speech and emotional functional networks, and also preliminary proof that poverty alleviation and building a well-off society may also be important for college students’ social adaptation.
