| Predictability and preview processing are important factors that affect reading efficiency throughout the entire reading process. The generation of predictability is based on the previous context(global predictability)or a small part of the previous content(local predictability). In Chinese expression, when an adjective modifies a noun and is placed in front of a noun,it will restrict the nouns after it.The degree of this restriction reflects the level of predictability of the adjective. When the fixation point moves to the adjective position, whether the reader can notice the content after the adjective, this is the content of the preview processing research. And whether the level of adjective predictability affects the reader’s preview processing, and whether adjectives with opposite meanings and the reader’s reading style affect the relationship between the two are the questions discussed in this study. This study used an eye tracker to record the reader’s eye movement patterns during reading, and used the boundary paradigm to explore whether the predictability of antonym adjectives affects the preview processing of college students with different reading styles.Experiment 1 used 3(Adjective predictability: high, low, none)× 2(Preview type: consistent, inconsistent)within the subject design, and analyzed adjective N and noun N+1 eye movement indicators in two regions,to explore whether the local predictability effects of adjectives exists, and if so,whether different predictability has an impact on preview processing. The results showed that in the N+1 region, the main effects of local predictability of adjectives and preview types were significant, and the interaction between them was significant.High predictability condition could promote preview processing better.Experiment 2adopted 3(Reading style: adjective tendency type, noun tendency type, undifferentiated type)× 2(Adjective part of speech: positive, negative)× 2(Adjective predictability: high, low)× 2(Preview type: consistent, inconsistent)mixed design to explore the effects of adjective part of speech and reading style on the interaction between adjective predictability and preview processing. It was found that in some eye movement indicators, compared with negative adjectives, positive adjectives could promote preview processing more, but weaken the effect of predictability on preview processing.Compared with other reading style subjects, the high predictability of adjectives had less effect on preview processing in the reading of subjects with adjective tendency;when the target noun was modified by a negative adjective, compared with the adjective tendency subjects, the high predictability adjectives could promote the preview processing of the noun tendency subjects. Therefore, the conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)In Chinese reading, the local predictability effect of adjectives exists.(2)The local predictability of adjectives affects preview processing, conforms to the parallel processing model and has a parafoveal-on-foveal effect.(3)Adjectives with opposite meanings and the reading style of college students all affect the interaction between predictability and preview processing. |
