Tropical cyclone(TC)precipitation has caused widespread concern in recent decades due to its impact on the social economy.A considerable amount of work has been done to study the precipitation of landfalling TC.The precipitation brought by a type of TC which is unlandfalling(i.e.sideswiping TC)is also an important part of TC precipitation, but so far little attention has been paid to it.Based on this, this paper utilizes the best track data and daily precipitation data of China Meteorological Administration(CMA)from 1960 to 2018(59 years)to study the characteristics of sideswiping TC and its precipitation, and to make a comparative study with the landfalling TC and its precipitation. Results show that :(i)the interannual frequency variation of the two types of TC fluctuates greatly, and the sideswiping TCs fluctuates more significantly, and both show a downward trend;(ii)the interseasonal variations of the two types TC frequency and their associated precipitation are consistent, both reaching the peak in August;(iii)the interannual variation of precipitation of the two types of TCs is significant, and their annual mean precipitation also shows a downward trend, which is significantly correlated with the interannual variation of frequency;(iv)the precipitation of sideswiping TCs and landfalling TCs covers most coastal and inland areas of China, and the distributions are mainly determined by intense TCs.The precipitation intensity gradually decreases from the south-southeastern coastal areas of China to the northwest inland areas, with the maximum value appearing in Taiwan and Hainan.(v)Sideswiping and landfalling TCs associated extreme precipitation occurs not only in the islands and coastal areas, but also occurs over the inland area.Sideswiping TC intensity,MSD and moving speed are the important factors influencing its extreme precipitation,in addition, the interactions between TCs and the large scale circulation, and local topography are also the important factors.
