Research On The Improvement Of Competitiveness Of My Country's Glass Packaging Container Manufacturing Industry From The Perspective Of Environmental Regulation

Glass container manufacturing industry,a branch of the traditional manufacturing industries in China,has been faced with significant challenges in recent years.The industry has been under strict environmental regulations due to the pollution it causes;at the same time,the escalation of the trade war between China and the United States increases international trade barriers including tariffs forced by the government of The United States as well as anti-dumping and countervailing lawsuits by the same industry in the United States.Whether environmental regulation can improve or hinder the competitiveness of an industry has always been a controversial topic among scholars in related fields,and this essay aims to study the impact of environmental regulation on the competitiveness of manufacturing industries and puts forward measures to help improve the competitiveness of the industry.This essay is structured as below: First,background analysis is carried out by summarizing the development of China's glass packaging container manufacturing and the environmental regulation imposed on it;Second,an introduction is given on the measures of environmental regulation taken against the same industry in other counties,following which the impact on the competitiveness of this industry is analyzed in an effort to seek successful international experience of environmental regulations;Third,this essay conducts an in-depth research on the relationship between environmental regulations and the competitiveness of China's glass container manufacturing.In this chapter,the competitive advantages and the current problems of glass packaging industry are first discussed via analyzing competitiveness factors in Porter's Diamond Model.The positive effects of environmental regulation measures on technological innovation of the industry are then verified based on the analysis on changing factors of competitiveness caused by the measures.Furthermore,an assessment on changes in export competitiveness of this industry is made by measuring competitiveness indexes before and after environmental regulations.Subsequently the essay discusses how this industry has obtained the "first-mover advantage” in global market;Finally,the essay summarizes the study results and puts forward a series of policy suggestions.Key findings of the study include:(1)glass container industry is a must-have industry in China even though it inevitably causes pollution.As a country with large amounts of consumption of glass packaging products,China has to balance its glass consumption,production and recycling,so as to achieve the goal of “internal recycle” in glass products.Otherwise,a plethora of waste glass will cause secondary pollution,seriously hindering the growth of green packaging industry;(2)environmental regulation plays a positive role in enhancing the competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry that produces pollution at the present stage.The government effectively regulates polluting industries with appropriate environmental regulations,triggering both " compensation effect of innovation" and "first-mover advantage",which greatly enhances the competitiveness of such industries;(3)an effective environmental regulation should focus on gradually strengthening the technological innovation ability of enterprises and increasing their market opportunities.The government can achieve diversified forms of cooperation with enterprises to facilitate their technological innovation ability through the adjustment of industrial policies.
