As a special kind of social-ecological system, the historical residential district is closely related to the space in terms of its functional objectives, elements and structural relationships. In the process of modernization and development of the neighborhood, there is an obvious contradiction between the public space of the residential historic district and the needs of the residents in the neighborhood. In the process of external urban development, the "old" public space has shown great maladjustment under the disturbing impact of "new" demands, and the phenomena of environmental decay, single function and lack of vitality of public space have made the development of the neighborhood face the danger of stagnation. In the past, the conservation and development of residential historic districts were focused on the level of "conservation" or only the material transformation of public space, which neglected the resilient development of public space in the face of internal and external disturbances. Therefore, how to cushion the disturbance impact brought by the change of residents' demand during the development of residential historic districts through the coordinated configuration of public space elements, and how to promote the improvement of spatial resilience of residential historic districts to promote the sustainable development of the districts, has become an urgent issue to be solved.Based on the above background, this thesis takes the public space of residential historic districts as the research object and uses the spatial sentence method to quantify the external manifestations of spatial resilience in the Shangxin Street historic district, revealing the relationship between spatial elements of complex systems and resilience as well as human behavioral activities,in order to explore relevant measures to improve spatial resilience, including improving functional mix, sorting out the street network, reshaping open space and other related strategies. It is hoped that by exploring methods and strategies to improve the spatial resilience level of residential historic districts, the sustainable development of residential historic districts in the face of disturbance impacts will be promoted. The article begins with the analysis and integration of relevant literature, outlines the research background of spatial resilience of residential historic districts, briefly describes the source of the thesis selection, and analyzes the relevant concepts.Through the combing of the current conservation and resilient cities in residential historic districts, the article explores the gaps of the current research, deepens the understanding of the purpose and content of this thesis, borrows appropriate research methods, and finally constructs the research framework of this thesis. The second section of the article discusses how spatial syntax intervenes in the study of spatial resilience in residential historic districts.Firstly, the theory of spatial syntax is studied;secondly, the sources of spatial resilience and related practical cases are explained;then the research elements and influencing factors of spatial resilience of residential historic districts are analyzed;the proposed problems of the districts are transformed into spatial resilience problems;finally, the spatial resilience assessment method of residential historic districts based on spatial syntax is established. The third and fourth chapters of the article use the spatial sentence method to analyze the spatial resilience of the Shangxin Street historic district as an example.Chapter 3 provides an overview of the current situation of public space in Shangxin Street, firstly,it introduces the neighborhood through field research and collection of relevant historical data, secondly,it analyzes the current situation of public space in Shangxin Street based on the perspective of spatial resilience and summarizes its vulnerability to clarify the level of spatial resilience of the neighborhood, and at the same time,it prepares for the construction of the syntactic model and the interpretation of the resilience of the syntactic analysis results in the later part. The fourth chapter analyzes the neighborhood space using the spatial syntax method, and analyzes the constituent elements of public space based on the syntactic indexes such as symbiosis, average depth and coefficient of convergence of visual field in the spatial syntax, and then evaluates the resilience characteristics such as multi-functionality,connectivity and safety to reveal the specific problems of spatial resilience of public space in historical neighborhoods. In the fifth chapter, based on the spatial resilience problem analyzed in the previous thesis, the article refers to the relevant urban design theories and optimizes the adaptability and robustness of the neighborhood space in terms of function, street network and core space to improve the spatial resilience of the historic district, and finally verifies the rationality of the improvement strategy by using spatial syntax again, proving the feasibility of the improvement strategy.
