Wang Shuo is a character with multiple identities in the period of social transformation in the 1980 s and 1990 s.His early works are criticized in the literary world for their labeled ruffian literature. The rise of mass culture made Wang Shuo share the huge commercial benefits brought by modern media technology, but he was forced to flee.Until the publication of "looking beautiful" in 1999,he reappeared in front of the public with another look, which also showed that Wang Shuo formally embarked on the later stage of his creative career. This paper is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, through Wang Shuo's film and television production experience after the 1990 s,we start with Wang Shuo's own creation crisis, including the consequences of his reproduction art in the self feeding machinery industry, the failure of film art efforts and the misunderstanding of public interest. Then, based on Wang Shuo's criticism from the outside world, this paper analyzes the profound contradiction between Wang Shuo and popular culture and the deep motivation of Wang Shuo's determination to make change from the conflict between Wang Shuo and academia, mainstream ideology and the public. The second chapter is the key point of this paper. The author analyzes Wang Shuo's novels and essays from different angles in the way of text analysis, mainly from Wang Shuo's selection of three main topics of "spiritual home","nature" and "death",and clarifies Wang Shuo through the adjustment of narrative strategy, language and artistic writing of image The main characteristics of Wang Shuo's later creation and the change of his narrative mode highlight Wang Shuo's farewell to the former commercial writing mode and his recovery of pure literary ideal. However, the indifference of his later works reflects Wang Shuo's incompetence in this kind of writing from another aspect, which indirectly proves the failure of Wang Shuo's literary transformation. The third chapter mainly discusses Wang Shuo's cultural criticism. The author takes Wang Shuo's criticism of Jin Yong as the starting point, and from the erosion of Hong Kong's popular culture on the mainland's local culture and the plunder of the market and the audience, leads to Wang Shuo's worries aboutthe Chinese local popular culture.Although Wang Shuo's cultural criticism has produced different voices for the critics, there are still some defects in his cultural criticism, which leads to his cultural criticism and his early cultural works being evaluated by two polarizations.
