Visual afterimage is a common visual phenomenon in daily life.It is not only used for various inventions and designs, but also a common tool in medical and psychological research.Color and contour are two important factors affecting the afterimage, and the enhancement of contour to the afterimage involves a color filling effect. For this reason, researchers proposed different models to explain and predict it,such as FECADE model and mixed computing model. They proposed that the color filling of the posterior image was related to the feature trigger and the contour blocking, and the contour itself would enhance the perception of the afterimage. However, the current models and the studies on the influence factors of the afterimage rarely involve the contour color. The contour color in the afterimage generation stage has not been considered as an influence feature to be added into the afterimage model, and previous studies have found that the contour color in this stage does affect the perception of the afterimage. The purpose of this study is to explore the afterimage generation stage, the influence of contour color on the afterimage and the influence mechanism through three studies, and to supplement and improve the previous models.Study 1 is a 2(like color:red/green)×4(color relations:SC/CC/NC/NI)within the subjects of design, use van Lier afterimage as an adaption stimuli-composed of three colors(red/green/gray)eight-pointed star to induce afterimage. And a four-pointed star adding information with one of the three colors(red/green/gray)appears after the adaption. The appearance of afterimage was set as the main measurement, and the duration as the second measurement, exploring the conditions of three relationships between the color inner the contour with the afterimage-similar color(SC)/complementary color(CC)/neutral color(NC).It is found that the color similar to the color of the afterimage is added into the contour, which has a strengthening effect on the perception of the afterimage, while the complementary color has a weakening effect on the perception of the afterimage.Since the color of the contour is a color of additional letter information, the overall afterimage perception has a certain enhancement compared with the contour without letter information. Therefore, the second study did not add additional color information in the contour, but change the color of four-pointed star contour lines as red, green or black.Study 2 included two experiments, and the experiment 1 is 2(after like colors:red/green)×3(color relations:SC/CC/NC)of the two factors within subjects design. The adaption stimuli and the measurements were the same with study 1,but changed the color of the outline line in contours(red/green/black),to explore the effect of outline color on the perception of afterimage. The results showed that the contour color similar to the color of the afterimage had an enhancement effect on the perception of the afterimage, while the complementary color has a weakening effect it.Experiment is also 2(like color:red/green)×3(color relations:SC/CC/NC)within the subjects of design. In the form of the watercolor illusion contour,a parallel color contour(red/green/black)is added outside the black four-pointed star contour as the contour stimuli.Same stimuli and measurements as the study 1 were set,to explore external color like perception afterimage. It was found that the external color of the contour had little effect on the perception of the afterimage.Study 3 is 2(like color:red/green)×3(color relations:SC/CC/NC)×2(area:middle/tip)of the three factors within subjects design. In the four-pointed star outer-contour were added the inner-contour with three colors(red/green/black).with the region and shape matching to the eight-pointed star grey area in central part. This study is to explore the effect of the color of inner-contour color on afterimage filling-in.The results showed that no afterimage filling-in occurred in the middle of the contour no matter what the color of the contour is.That is,the color of the contour does not affect the filling-in effect of the contour on the afterimage.Above all.in the stage of afterimage appears, the color inner the contour and on the contour lines has an effect on the perception of the afterimage--the color similar to the afterimage has an enhancement effect on the perception of the afterimage, while the complementary color has a weakening effect on the perception of the afterimage. The color outside the contour has no effect on the afterimage perception, and the color of the contour does not affect the filling-in effect of the afterimage color. This indicates that the color feature is likely to be the trigger for afterimage perception accounting for the contour enhancement effect rather than the trigger for color diffusion, and the generation stage of the afterimage is likely to be accompanied by synchronous information integration. The results of this study add new findings to the influencing factors of the afterimage, add new dimensions to the theoretical model of the afterimage, supplement it,and preliminarily put forward the trigger mechanism of the afterimage enhancement effect of the contour, and the dual operation mechanism of the different effects of the contour on the afterimage. These findings also provide new ideas for afterimage-related experiments and more rigorous control factors in the study,so as to obtain more accurate research results. In addition, the findings of this study also support the brain processing theory of afterimage and provide more evidence for it.In reality, the results can also be applied to the treatment of visual defects,neuro-developmental measurement and other fields.
