Water-and-land painting which was popular during the period of Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties,is one of the most important mediums in the water-and-land ritual of Buddhism. As the object of this thesis, the water-and-land paintings in Baoning Temple which are characterized by fine brush and well reserved, are collected in Shanxi province museum now.It is believed that the paintings have a direct connection with the "Tumu Incident".The paintings were given to the Baoning temple in the name of guarding the frontier. However, there are some controversies of these paintings, such as creative date and authors.Firstly, the thesis summarizes the research status of the waterand-land paintings in Baoning Temple. And then,it analyzes the historical evolution of Baoning Temple,as well as the general situation of these paintings.Secondly, the paper denies the possibility of "Paintings of Yuan dynasty ",and believed that it should have been made during the period from Jingtai to Tianshun in Ming dynasty, through comparing the religion paintings from court and folk.Meanwhile, the essay questions the author ownership.Thirdly, after comparing with folk murals and analyzing the contents and skills of these paintings,it reaches a conclusion that the water-and-land paintings in Baoning Temple were probably painted by folk painters in Shanxi province. And then,on the basis of previous discussion, the paper discusses the court and folk painters 'identities, production process, creation styles and other aspects. Finally, the thesis explores the communications and transmission between the water-and-land paintings of folk and pictures of Ming court. This dissertation starts with the images, using stylistics, philology, comparative research and other methods. And makes a great effort in creative date and author ownership.
