Culture is the soul of a country and a nation, and cultural self-confidence is a country's affirmation of its own culture, and the degree of cultural inheritance is closely related to the prosperity of the nation. As a master of contemporary Chinese martial arts novels,Jin Yong's works are full of unique martial arts elements and rich Chinese traditional cultural connotations. The Deer and the Cauldron is the last long martial arts novel written by Jin Yong featuring small characters as the main character.Once Minford's English translation of The Deer and the Cauldron came out,it received a good response from readers in the East and the West.Taking it as a research object can provide lessons for the English translation of martial arts novels in the future.Martial arts novels carry the broad and profound national culture and national spirit of our country, and have rich cultural connotations and national characteristics. As a cognitive thinking mode, metaphor is deeply influenced by factors such as culture, region, era, ideological and cultural background and so on.There are a lot of metaphorical expressions in martial arts novels, and how to make readers understand the connotation and meaning more effectively is a problem that needs to be solved. The proposal of translation adaptation and selection theory provides a new perspective for the study of metaphor translation. The theory is based on ecology and can systematically analyze the essence of translation, translation standards, translation principles, translation process, and translation methods from a more comprehensive perspective.description.In the translation process, the translator needs to adopt effective translation methods to subtly translate the metaphors in the novel into English,so as not to lose their language form and style, retain their integrity, and convey the national culture and spiritual connotation of the novel. So that the target-language readers can obtain the same or similar aesthetic feelings as the source-language readers. This article is based on the theory of translation adaptation and selection proposed by Professor Gengshen Hu,using the English translation of The Deer and the Cauldron by Minford as the corpus, and discusses examples of metaphor translation in his English translation in combination with the translation ecological environment, translation process and translation methods.Analyze the cultural characteristic words, character names, and names in the English translation of The Deer and the Cauldron from the translation process;analyze the metaphors of omission and martial arts in the text from the subject difference of the translator;discuss the translator's translation activities from the translation method Whether the language dimension, cultural dimension, and communication dimension are three-dimensionally transformed in the medium. It hopes to provide a reference for the future English translation of martial arts novels,so as to promote foreign readers to better accept Chinese martial arts novels and promote their overseas dissemination.
