Research On The Translation Strategies Of Minford's English Translation Of "The Deer And Ding Ji" From The Perspective Of Schema Theory

Based on the schema theory,this study takes Minford's English version of The Deer and the Cauldron as the research object,aiming to explore Minford's translation ideas and strategies.Schema theory was initially applied in the field of psychology.Schema theory holds that people's processing of new knowledge must be based on the brain's existing knowledge.The application of Schema in translation is conducive to the cognition of the translator's psychological process in translation,and the analysis of this process will be beneficial to translation and cross-cultural communication.The process of translation is the process of decoding and encoding.In cross-cultural communication,due to the significant differences between Chinese and English,when the target readers lack the cultural background,the translator first needs to decode the original text,then comprehensively consider the cultural background of the target readers,and finally encode it into the translation,so that the information of the original text can be effectively transmitted.After analyzing Minford's background,translation works and others' evaluation,the author finds out that,on the one hand,Minford advocates absolute faithfulness to the original text.Therefore,Minford will trace the source text and analyze the original text deeply before translation.Minford will decode the original text in combination with the background of the original text and cultural elements.Only after the accuracy of decoding is guaranteed,the subsequent translation steps will be carried out.On the other hand,Minford will consider the reading needs and habits of the target readers as much as possible.Because of the great differences between Chinese and English languages,there is bound to be cultural default.Facing this complex problem,Minford will mobilize a series of available factors in handling and flexibly transferring the original information to the target readers by using various strategies,which can reduce the reading obstacles caused by culture to some extent.It is found that there are three types of correspondence between the original Schema and the target translation: schema overlap,schema divergence and schema absence.In the research based on schema theory,the author summarizes the solutions to three corresponding schema ways: activating Schema,adjusting Schema and constructing Schema.To keep the style of the original as much as possible and to fully consider the reading ability of the target language readers,Minford adopts a variety of strategies to deal with the translation.Based on the study of The Deer and the Cauldron's English version,the author finds that Minford uses a variety of translation methods,such as literal translation,free translation,annotation,substitution and omission,to activate,adjust and construct schemata.The author hopes that by combing Minford's translation ideas and analyzing the translation strategies of his English version of The Deer and the Cauldron,we can explore how to establish better the relationship between the source language and the target language to improve the translation quality of traditional martial arts works.
