As a psychologist and aesthetician,Arnheim applied psychology to the research of art in his book Art and Visual Perception, analysing the effectiveness of human visual perception. After reading Art and Visual Perception by Arnheim,I realized that many ideas in the book are in line with the concept of sculpture. Therefore, this research takes the visual perception theory in the book as the research object to explore the connection between visual perception and realistic portrait sculpture.Using the theory of 'shape' and 'force' as the main study object, the theory of visual perception in personal sculpture practice is analysed in this paper. The most important thing about the shape is the simplified law of vision, that is,human vision tends to regard things as the simplest shape that can appear, and this shape has the distinctive character of things. This is of great significance to realistic portrait sculptures.A realistic portrait sculpture is to show the image characteristics of the human head, whereas simplifying rules can help us better capture and analyse the traits of characters. The image seen by vision is not static but dynamic. This is the role of forces in vision, and stillness is the state of mutual equilibrium of forces.Based on the analysis of the shape, the force can generate tension in different directions according to the features of the shape. The application of force enhances the expressive force of realistic portrait sculpture, and we can adjust the balance and direction of force according to the characteristics of the figures. The force is also expressed in the encroachment relationship between the shape and the surrounding space, with the projection and concavity of the shape showing the effect of encroaching on and being encroached by space. In this way,we can adjust the convex and concave shape to achieve satisfactory results when dealing with the shape of the sculpture.Through the application of personal practice,it is proved that Arnheim's theory of visual perception has instructive and practical significance for realistic portrait sculpture.
