At the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century,Sigmund Freud,an Austrian psychoanalyst, founded the theory of psychoanalysis, which had a profound impact on the society and literary and artistic creation of Vienna in the 20 th century. In 1909,American Austrian composer Arnold Schonberg completed his first opera Erwartung(Op.17).The birth of the opera was largely influenced by the theory of psychoanalysis in the same period. On the one hand, the theory of unconsciousness provides an important theoretical basis for Schoenberg's turning to the inner expression of unconsciousness, and the composer thus develops atonal music techniques.Erwartung is one of the representative works of atonality period(1908-1921).On the other hand, the author of the script gets inspiration from psychoanalysis cases and creates a hysterical "the woman" image in line with Schoenberg's unconscious pursuit. On the whole, the script plot and music style of Erwartung are similar to the fuzziness, incoherence and absurdity of dream. From the perspective of Freud's psychoanalysis theory, this paper mainly interprets Erwartung as a nightmare of Schoenberg through the dream interpretation theory of psychoanalysis theory, and analyzes the composer's psychological content in the work. This paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter discusses Erwartung, which is born in the background of psychoanalysis, mainly including the background of the establishment of psychoanalysis, the principle of dream interpretation theory, the influence of psychoanalysis on Schoenberg's aesthetic concept, and the connection between the script of Erwartung and psychoanalysis cases,as well as the autobiographical and "dream" characteristics of opera itself. The second chapter is the core of this paper, using the principles of dream interpretation theory to interpret the "the manifest dream-content" and " the latent dream-thought" of Erwartung. The manifest dream-content mainly discusses the means of opera script and music to construct the surface of dreams from four aspects: condensation, displacement, symbol and embellishment. The latent dream-thought is to connect Schoenberg's music fragments repressed in unconsciousness with his personal experience through Freud's free association method, trying to deduce the composer's content hidden in unconsciousness. The third chapter discusses the aesthetic meaning of the theme and form of dream in the opera Erwartung.
