After the Opium War,Western photographic techniques and theories were introduced to China, and photo studios gradually emerged in China, with framing as an important information carrier for photographs. This paper takes photo mounting in photography studios during the late Qing and Republican periods as the object of study, which analyzed in detail its historical origin, its development after its introduction into China, and its specific form and style, also points out the important value of mounting. The purpose of this paper is to explore the physical characteristics of framing itself and the historical and cultural connotations attached to it,which have transformed the properties of photographs, mainly in terms of the circulation of framed photographs as"gifts" in the system of social interaction, shifting photographs from the private to the public sphere. This paper is divided into five parts:the introductory section explains the origin, purpose, significance and current status of the study;the first chapter focuses on the origin and development of Western photo mounting;the second chapter explains the introduction of foreign photographic culture into China and the development of photo mounting in China;the third chapter analyzes the main forms and style characteristics of the late Qing and Republican periods by means of specific physical data;the fourth chapter discusses the influence of mounting on the properties of photographs.Using documentary, empirical and quantitative research methods, this paper attempts to restore the historical aspects of photo mounting in Chinese photo studios during the late Qing and Republican periods, and provides an independent analysis of the special value of mounting.
