During the period of the Republic of China, there witnessed a continuous expansion in the scope and scale of business of photo studios, indicating a development of diversification. Moreover, in terms of development in techniques, portrait photography has been endowed with higher artistic pursuits. With the enhancement of public awareness of aesthetic appreciation, the innovation in photography technology, and the improvement of standards of those who worked in this field, the meaning and the style of photography experienced tremendous changes which ultimately lead to the formation of distinct national and artistic characteristics in that particular historical era. A number of the first-rate products of certain well-known photo studios are, still familiar to following generations even today, portrait photos of celebrities such as elites and socialite ladies of high popularity. The prevalence of these photos was attributed to the widespread supplements on photography in newspapers, photography magazines and pictorials in the20s and30s of20th century.
