Education could contribute to the rise and fall of a country.English plays an significant role in national communication,which is why considerable public attention is directed toward to English education.English teachers play an important role in English curriculum reform.Accordingly,improving English teachers' professional quality is key in ensuring the effective English learning of students and the ultimate success of English curriculum reform.English education in middle school has profound implications on the whole stage of English education.It is of great significance to study the teachers' professional quality of middle school English teachers.However,the development of teachers' professional quality(TPQ)focuses more on external force-driven factors,consequently neglecting the internal motivations of teachers.Teacher efficacy has become a hot research topic among scholars in English language teaching in recent years.The study of the current situation and relationship between middle school English teachers' teacher efficacy and TPQ is of great importance to the improvement of TPQ and teachers' professional development.This study raises the following research questions:(1)What is the current situation of teacher efficacy and TPQ among middle school English teachers?(2)Is there a significant relationship between teacher efficacy and TPQ among middle school English teachers?(3)What are strategies to improve TPQ of middle school English teachers? To answer these research questions,130 middle school English teachers in Boxing County were first surveyed using a Likert scale,and the current situation in terms of teacher efficacy and TPQ was obtained through SPSS 26.0 data analysis.Second,the relationship between teacher efficacy and TPQ was explored further through IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 and classroom observation.Finally,measures to improve teacher efficacy and TPQ were explored through interviews.The results revealed the following:(1)Middle school English teachers in Boxing County generally had a high level of teacher efficacy.TPQ essentially reached the standard level;however,there were still a number of potential problems.Middle school English teachers do not have a clear concept of teachers' professional quality.Most teachers love their jobs,but their passion for the job can easily be affected by economic rewards,work intensity,and other factors.Middle school English teachers were generally found to have a solid grasp of the basic knowledge of English language,but their knowledge of other topics closely related to English language teaching was insufficient.The teaching and research ability and the reflective ability of middle school English teachers was generally weak,and their ability to analyze teaching material and write academic papers need to be further strengthened.(2)No significant positive correlation was found between teacher efficacy and TPQ.However,there was a significant correlation found between teachers' personal teaching efficacy and their TPQ.(3)In light of the current situation and the interview results,the author puts forward some suggestions to improve the TPQ of middle school English teachers from the perspectives of English teachers,schools and the educational administration.Teachers are supposed to clarify the teachers' professional quality requirements and become a reflective and research-Oriented teacher.Schools should provide excellent training opportunities for teachers.Educational administration is supposed to establish a fair wage system and reform the teacher evaluation and promotion system.This study will be helpful for future scholars to study the teacher efficacy and TPQ of middle school English teachers.It seeks to direct researchers' attention to the internal factors that affect teacher quality improvement,improve middle school English teachers' professional quality and the quality of middle school English teaching,and promote the curriculum reform of elementary English in China.
