As one of the representative figures of the fourth generation of the Frankfurt School and a leading figure of contemporary "critical theory," Rahel Jaeggi is an internationally renowned thinker of the twenty-first century. Her theory of alienation has had a great impact on the Western academic world and has also attracted the attention of domestic scholars.Jaeggi is committed to reinterpreting and activating Marx's critical approach from the perspective of social philosophy and critical theory, and advancing the contemporary development of Marxism. Her book Alienation composes the history of the development of alienation theory from a unique perspective and provides a novel scheme for constructing alienation theory while offering a theoretical critique of some contemporary scholars.According to Jaeggi, alienation is,on the one hand,a critical concept that diagnoses or clarifies the failure or destruction of the constitutive relations of the social subject with which society and oneself are connected;on the other hand, alienation is a diagnostic concept that reveals how self-determination and self-actualization are undermined and hindered. In the new theoretical context and contemporary situation, the study of Jaeggi's theory of alienation will not only help us to expand and deepen the new contemporary connotation of Marxism, but also help us to explore new ways of discarding alienation.
