As one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century,Anthony Giddens dissects the post-traditional nature of today's Western society from the perspective of modernity. In terms of the degree and speed of change, there are huge differences between post-traditional societies and any previous social form.Compared with traditional societies, although post-traditional societies have made progress in economic development and material abundance, their internal contradictions are rife, and problems such as deteriorating ecology, lack of trust between people, and survival anxiety are rife in society.Giddens' theory of self-identity is based on the social critique of modernity, rethinking the essence of the crisis of modernity from the perspective of the crisis of self-identity.Studying Giddens' theory of self-identity in the context of the understanding paradigm of cultural philosophy can deeply explore the root causes of the crisis of self-identity from the perspective of modernity and the possible path of transcendence from the metaphysical level of philosophy on the basis of sociological identity thought.Through the analysis of Giddens' theory of modernity and self-identity theory,it is conducive to our re-understanding of the significance of self-identity to social existence, social composition and social transformation in the process of social historical evolution, and is conducive to deeply understanding the close relationship between self-identity and cultural identity, and examining the various possible cultural crises that should be avoided in the process of modernity transformation from the dimension of theoretical legitimacy. The self-confidence of Chinese culture comes from self-identification,and self-identity is manifested in the individual's identification with the whole, which is of great significance for the cohesion and centripetal force of Chinese culture. This paper attempts to break through the previous institutional research on Giddens' self-identity theory, and to interpret the crisis of individual self-identity in the context of modern society on a cultural and philosophical level.Starting from the origin of Giddens' self-identity theory, this paper reorganizes the theoretical connotation of Giddens' self-identity,and analyzes the important role of self-identity theory in its entire ideological system.Through the background analysis of the modernity of the self-identity crisis, the theme and content of Giddens' self-identity theory are elaborated from different dimensions, and finally the new model of individual self-identity is reconstructed by taking life liberation and political liberation as the solution to the self-identity crisis. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of Giddens' self-identity thought from the perspective of modernity are comprehensively analyzed and discussed, and the reference significance of Giddens' self-identity thought to self-identity and cultural identity in the current process of China modernization is discussed.
