| Each kind of practice of literary criticism is considered as an unprecedented dialogue with the ancient scholars,re-establishing a connection with their thoughts. However, the meaning of literary works is uncertain,so the interpretation of the them remains dynamic. Therefore, the study of the certain meaning of classic works has turned to the study of the textual meaning generation mechanism. In 1949,Faulkner won the Noble Prize in Literature for his contribution in artistic value to new literature in America. With the studies on Faulkner’s works by American critics growing gradually, some readers could not accept his difficult writing styles, and he even received such criticism. However, these classic works become more powerful under the influence of time. The Sound and the Fury is the most famous work of William Faulkner. Not only does it occupy the pinnacle of unique artistic value with its typical characteristics of stream of consciousness,it is also the core of Faulkner’s literary kingdom. As a relatively advanced research in linguistics,Semiotics is closely related to language.Language here is not only a “means of communication”,it can produce new meanings by itself. This production is the premise of mechanism of textual meaning regeneration, providing a new approach for literary criticism. Therefore, this thesis will study on how the classic work The Sound and the Fury achieve meaning regeneration. This thesis intends to solve the problem of “how does a literary text achieve meaning regeneration in the change of subject and meaning?” Based on the theory of the textual meaning generation mechanism, which is raised by Juri Mikhailovich Lotman(1922-1993),the founder of Culture Semiotics of Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School,it will analyze the mechanism of textual meaning generation of The Sound and the Fury. The research method of this thesis mainly includes the four dimensions of the mechanism of textual meaning generation: the textual meaning generation mechanism, the internal and external recoding mechanism, the space simulation mechanism, and the text interaction mechanism. In my expounding, intertextuality, cultural memory studies and other theories are used to support my ideas to ensure the integrality of my analysis. In the analysis of the full text, this thesis has the following important findings:Through the mechanism of textual meaning generation,we can discover the mythical memory and the American southern environment contained in the novel.Through the internal and external recoding mechanism, this article integrates the crossover of viewpoints and the stream of consciousness, finding the truth about time.Through the space simulation mechanism,it explores the spatial relationship, spatial simulation function and cultural memory across the novel, from which it reflects the infinite real world within a limited space.Through the text interaction mechanism,it explores intertextuality in the novel and two modes of communication, providing multiple interpretations of open texts. The change of meaning is a process of regeneration. The uncertainty of the classic works and the subjective differences of readers determine that literary criticism will always be a process of dynamic interpretation. In conclusion, through the interpretation of the four dimensions of the text The Sound and the Fury, this thesis reveals the inter-epochal and futuristic nature of Faulkner’s works, explores the new trend of literary criticism, and also reflects on the new path for the development of cultural memory. In short, mechanism of textual meaning generation provides a valuable reference for exploring the meaning of classic works. |
