Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine,commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association,was composed by Eric Whitacre in 2001,making him the youngest composer to receive the competitive ACDA's Raymond C.Brock commission.Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the Three Masters of the High Renaissance.In this piece,to reconstruct Leonardo's artistic figure,Whitacre combines music elements and compositional techniques of the Renaissance,early Baroque,and contemporary period,resulting both stylistic characteristics and acoustic beauty.This work achieves excellent staging effect through Whitacre's creative compositional style,with a promising satisfaction to its listeners.The paper is mainly discussed through three following chapters.The first chapter is to provide the compositional background of this work,including a brief biography of the composer,the information about the author of the lyric,and Whitacre's choice of the theme.The second chapter is a detailed analysis of form and compositional style.The third chapter is a study of conducting techniques,exploring distinctive interpretations in the live performance.This paper is expected to serve as a reference for the practice of Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine.
