A Study On The Use Of "odd Characters" In Wang Duo's Regular Script Works

Wang Duo had profound knowledge and was especially interested in the archaeological relics.He was famous for his Chinese calligraphy---Regular Script,Running Script and Cursive Script,among which the last two items were his main achievement.When he was practicing Running Script and Cursive Script,he kept trying to make brave innovations in writing layout and use of ink.At the same time,he was deeply engrossed in writing Unique Characters,which was influenced by the social environment in the Ming Dynasty and the impact of Confucian development on literature,and reflecting his calligraphical concept in freely choosing script.Wang Duo's regular script in big characters was taken from Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan,which was frequently used by him in tablet inscriptions and occasionally used in poems and articles.His regular script in small characters was taken from Zhong You,Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi,which was used to write prefaces and postscripts.Keeping in mind the calligraphical concept,Wang Duo not only devoted himself to practicing calligraphy after the model,but also made modifications in order to get the ‘orthographic characters'.He wrote Unique Characters to make difference from the ‘coarse' ones in the popular calligraphy.‘Unique Characters' in this essay are characters which are not in the common character frame.In the process of copying and creating,Wang Duo was trying to find the basis of‘Unique Characters' from a number of ancient cords,(word)books,unearthed Seal Scritp and Official Script.He was also greatly influenced by former calligraphers whose works were always in Variant Characters.It is necessary to make further resource arrangement and classification of his Unique Characters.The essay has made identification and arrangement of Wang Duo's Regular Script works in the chronological chart,in order to find the rules and features which Wang Duo practically applied in his works.
