The term "du family" refers to a family of documentary and archival nouns with the word "du" as the core root word(noun cluster).According to the literature, the monosyllabic word "du" first appeared in the pre-Qin period, and was combined with "gan" during the Warring States period to form the first disyllabic noun of the "du family" was "gan du".Since then, other nouns within the family have been created, and by the Ming dynasty all of the known "du family" documentary nouns have appeared,43 in total.Within this family, there are 42 disyllabic documentary nouns, including "gan du","an du","chi du","wen du",and "gong du".The 42 disyllabic documentary nouns are divided into a number of categories. In terms of lexical composition, there are three types of compound words:united compound words, modifying compound words and verb-object structure compound words, and in most cases the root word "du" is in the postposition of the compound word. The documentary nouns of the "du family" are divided into three stages, from their emergence and development in ancient times, their gradual disappearance in modern times and their complete disappearance in modern times.Based on the three stages of the development of the "du family",this paper uses linguistic metrics, interdisciplinary analysis and documentary analysis to study the document nouns in each stage, focusing on three aspects: lexical composition, connotation and usage,to explore the usage and application of the entire family and the main representative nouns in each period. It is found that the use of document nouns in the ancient "du family" was on the whole continuous, with an increasing number of document nouns in the family and an expanding field of application; In the modern "du family" document nouns began to gradually disappear, with six in the late Qing Dynasty and eleven in the Republic of China; In modern times, the term has been completely retired, appearing only as a historical term in academic research in specialist fields. In general, there are many historical, cultural and linguistic reasons for the demise of the term "du family",as well as micro reasons for working with documents.Among them, cultural changes and developments(including political culture)are the root cause of its disappearance, and the development of documentary work is the direct cause of its disappearance.
