Since the invention of camera, documentary films took one kind of phantom type of videos and were beginning to be involved in people's lives. And it also manifested its important humanity value in the past hundred of years. As a typical kind of documentary film, the historical documentary film plays a very important part around the world. Since the 1960s and 1970s, the creative idea of direct movie, real movie have influenced the global documentary film creation, and also affected the development of the similar kind of documentary film to great extent in China.In China, historical documentary films existed in a form of historical bibliographies in its infancy. They were about will of state and ideology and they also shouldered national spirits and cultivated temperament. After 1980s, documentary films became a kind of new way of literature announcement. In real practice, the shooting/production method of documentary films has experienced great changes in the past decades. With the principle of respecting history, new concepts are introduced such as oral history, representation of historic events and cross-border usage of elements in TV series.The dissertation researches the emergence of historical documentary films in China. It gives clear categories and definitions of each type. Meanwhile, it tracks the development of documentary films in China, focusing on the creation and expression. The dissertation will unveil the production mechanism and survival difficulties historical documentary films on mainstream media platforms are facing. Through the comparison between situations at home and abroad, the dissertation will provide some learning and guidance for the further development of historical documentary films in China.
