Research On The Construction Of Female Images In The Cover Story Of "Sanlian Life Weekly"

Previous research on gender and the media found that media presents women' s images commonly with stereotypes and gender biases and lack of women' s discourse power.In the21 st century,the social status of women has been significantly improved,and women' s images have increasingly appeared in the media.Studying the image of women in the media not only reflects the development and changes of women' s social images,but also has a positive guiding role in awakening women' s self-awareness,as well as promoting the objectiveness and fairness of women' s reports in the media.Based on the gender theory,the study summarizes 210 female images appearing in the cover story of Sanlian Life Weekly from 1995 to 2019.The thesis uses Content Analysis and Text Analysis to classify and text female images.Meanwhile,the study tries to use objective and quantitative research method to truly present the women' s image in news magazines.The research found that the female images constructed by Sanlian Life Weekly are mainly young and middle-aged women,and Sanlian Life Weekly tends to choose intellectuals and entertainment stars as the reporting object.Sanlian Life Weekly has constructed three main women images,including professional women,intellectual women and independent women.However,it is still difficult to abandon the traditional gender concept,placing women under the male aesthetic.Therefore,Sanlian Life Weekly has constructed a large number of be-watched female stars and traditional housewives.In the 25-years development of Sanlian Life Weekly,the construction of female images in the media has been influenced by not only the changes of the media itself,but also politics,economics and culture.The core reporting types of female characters has shifted from public roles to personal roles,and narrative subjects have shifted from objective recorders to participants.Neutral reporting has gradually become the mainstream trend.However,the Sanlian Life Weekly still has inadequacy in the construction of female images.In the report,men dominate the discourse right,and the socially disadvantaged groups are collectively speechless.Stereotypes and gender prejudice are still ubiquitous.
