A Relational Study Of Undergraduate Students' Engagement In General Education Courses And Gains On Core Competencies

This study uses the data of general education courses learning engagement and gains on core competencies survey of Undergraduates in X University,and uses descriptive analysis and multiple regression analysis models to analyze the current situation of general education courses learning engagement and gains on core competencies of Undergraduates in X University,as well as the relationship between general education courses learning engagement and gains on core competencies.This research will help to further enrich the theory of learning engagement.And at the same time,it will have certain reference significance for improving the quality of general education courses in X University and other institutions.The results show that: Undergraduate students have a relatively low degree of learning engagement in general education courses.Specifically,Students are more engaged in "pre-class preparation",but in "critical thinking" and "class participation",students' learning engagement is just so so.And in "teacher-student interaction","group learning" and "academic challenges",students' learning engagement is insufficient,especially in "teacher-student interaction",the students' learning engagement is the lowest.In addition,students from different backgrounds have certain differences in general education courses learning engagement.Undergraduates' gains on core competencies are at a medium level.Among the three dimensions,students' gains in "cultural understanding and self-awareness" is slightly better,the gains in "thinking and expression ability" and "mathematics statistics,information search ability,and computer skills" are both average,and the latter is worse.In addition,students from different backgrounds have some differences in gains on core competencies.Under control the factor of student background,the more students engaged in general education courses,the more their "thinking and expression skills" will be improved.Among the six dimensions,except the "academic challenges",the more students engaged in "critical thinking","teacher-student interaction","group learning","class participation",and "pre-class preparation",the more their "cultural understanding and self-awareness ability" will be improved.In terms of the six dimensions of students ' learning engagement in general education courses,except the "class participation" and "academic challenges",the more students engaged in "critical thinking","teacher-student interaction","group learning",and "pre-class preparation",the more their "mathematical statistics,information search capabilities,and computer skills" will be improved.In general,undergraduate students' learning engagement in general education courses has a positive impact on students' gains on core competencies.Finally,this study puts forward several suggestions from the level of university and teacher to improve students' engagement in general education courses and promote their core competencies.At the university level,university should increase the publicity of general education,so that students can fully understand the value of general education;The university should set up the curriculum system of general education reasonably on the basis of fully understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the school.At the teacher level,general education teachers should change the traditional teaching methods,adopt diversified teaching methods,and pay attention to students' participation and interaction;In the process of general education courses teaching,teachers should fully carry out small class discussion on the basis of large class teaching,and give full play to the role of graduate teaching assistants.At the student level,students should correct the learning motivation of general education courses,give full play to their subjective initiative,and improve the level of learning engagement in general education courses.
