In an era of globalization, the competition of comprehensive national power is the competition of talents and technology in the final analysis. To develop education is very important for improving the populace's cultivation.Mathematics is a basic subject of primary and secondary school education. It is necessary to pay attention on students' mathematical attainments.Inference plays an important role in mathematics. To study mathematics needs to study inference.Making students to obtain some inferential capability is an important target of training students' mathematic quality.Detail investigation on mathematical inference capability of eighth-grade students is conducted in this paper. The investigation involves territory, gender, nonintellectual factor and mathematical inference capability.Based on the requirements of “Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011)” on developing students' mathematical inference capability and the comprehension of learning condition of eighth-grade students, the investigation is divided into two dimensions: plausible inference and deductive inference.Four capability levels are divided as level-0,level-1,level-2 and level-3.An evaluation tool is designed based on these considerations. The data are analyzed with Excel and SPSS 23.Descriptive analysis, difference analysis and correlation analysis are conducted on the results to better understand the current situation and influence factors of mathematical inference capability of eighth-grade students. The investigation results are listed as follows. In general, the plausible inference capability is not high, while the deductive inference capability is relatively high. The difference between plausible inference capabilities of boy students and girl students is not obvious, while the deductive inference capability of girl students is stronger than boy students. The plausible inference capabilities of urban students and rural students are almost the same, while the deductive inference capability of urban students is better than rural students. There are correlations between students' inference capability and their scholastic attainments, learning interest, learning self-confidence,learning endurance, learning rethinking and the cognition of inference. When solving problems, sometimes some students present “condition making-up” and “mastering but not right” phenomena. The investigation results can provide some valuable suggestions of improving students' inference capability.Based on the investigation results and analyzations of the existing problems of students' mathematical inference, the following suggestions are proposed.First, pay attention to the development of plausible inference capability, especially high-level plausible inference capability.Second, strengthen students' consciousness and capability of learning rethinking.Third, cultivate good mathematic learning habits and overcome the “mastering but not right” phenomena.Fourth, teach students in accordance of their aptitudes.Fifth, continue increasing inputs of rural education.Sixth, pay attention to the influences of nonintellectual factors on students' mathematical inference capabilities.
