Lu Feikui,who is a famous educator and publisher in modern China,once said,“Education is the foundation of nation,textbook is the foundation of education.”As the carrier of teaching content,textbook is the basis that teachers carry out teaching and students acquire knowledge.In the same way,the writing theory and writing practice which contained in writing textbooks also play a role in guiding teachers and students in theory and practice undoubtedly,which is an effective way for students to improve writing literacy.To a certain extent,the long-term inefficiency of writing teaching in China stems from the inadequacy of the development of writing content and the design of writing activities in textbooks.However,the content selection and compilation which are from excellent foreign writing textbooks provide opportunities for us to extract essence from others undoubtedly.In addition,in the era of media convergence,the combination of print media and emerging digital media is updating the content of textbooks and changing the learning style of learners.Cross-media writing,which takes advantage of different media to obtain information,judge utterance and uses media technology to express their inner voice,has become a new trend that students can use it to express emotions and thoughts and communicate effectively.Based upon it,this paper researches cross-media writing in the American original writing textbooks,aiming to provide some enlightenment and suggestions for the compilation of content in Chinese textbooks and writing teaching of front-line teachers.This paper takes the American original writing textbooks Writer's Choice:Grammar and Composition(Grades 6-12)as research material,and studies the macroscopic compilation and microcosmic content of cross-media writing in the textbooks.The compilation research mainly analyzes three aspects which are the quantity distribution,arrangement sequence and visual presentation of cross-media writing in textbooks.The content research focuses on the main types,constitutive elements and activity design of cross-media writing,then summarizes the features of cross-media writing.Through macroscopic examination and microcosmic analysis,it is discovered that cross-media writing in the textbooks presents basic characteristics of one center(centered on the improvement of writing competence with the help of media),two presentations,four features and five types.Finally,it puts forward effective suggestions for optimizing the compilation of Chinese textbooks and writing teaching in China.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,there are four chapters in this study.The contents of each part are summarized as follows.Introduction : Based upon a thorough analysis of domestic and foreign studies in connection with writing textbooks,writing teaching and cross-media writing,this paper establishes research objectives,selects research methods and clarifies research objects.Chapter one : The connotation and significance of cross-media writing.This part mainly introduces the insights of different scholars on the concept of cross-media writing,then defines the connotation of cross-media writing clearly,and expounds there are three values in setting cross-media writing in American writing textbooks:to implement the requirements of the mother tongue curriculum standards,improve students' writing competence and cultivate their media literacy.Chapter two : The compilation research on cross-media writing of the Writer's Choice.This chapter mainly analyzes three aspects which are the quantity distribution,arrangement sequence and presentation mode of cross-media writing in the textbooks.Firstly,it presents the quantity and distribution of cross-media writing in textbooks which is in the form of graphs,summarizes two arrangement ways of independent chapter and random embedding.Then it extracts two presentation modes of cross-media writing:graph presentation and word-image intertextuality.Chapter three :The content analysis on cross-media writing of the Writer's Choice.This chapter firstly overviews the main types of cross-media writing in the textbooks,summarizes the components of content and features of activity in cross-media writing by case analysis,and then on this basis it refines some prominent features that highlighted by cross-media writing in textbooks,which contain diagram auxiliary,specific knowledge,process traction and media convergence,etc.Chapter four :The enlightenment of cross-media writing of the Writer's Choice.Based upon macroscopic compilation research and microcosmic content analysis,this chapter concludes some enlightenment and suggestions for the improvement of our Chinese textbooks compilation and writing teaching which based on the cross-media writing in the textbooks,including increasing media communication writing activities in textbooks,presenting writing contents of textbooks through the way of intertextuality of word and image,setting communication context elements when writing teaching and so on.Finally,it focuses on teaching practice and reflection in localization of cross-media writing.Conclusion : Reviewing the research process,representing the research conclusion and reflecting on the gain and loss of the research.
